Pearl Jam's Jeff Ament has quietly self-funded 27 skate parks across Montana — driving the state every summer to sweep the concrete himself.
It started with one park in Missoula that snowballed into something he never planned. Now he's got 10 more towns penciled in for the next three years. Some of the kids from the first parks he built were 11 at the time. They're 20 now — and a group from the Browning Blackfeet Reservation is about to drive 1,200 miles to follow him to a grand opening at Standing Rock. Montana has one of the highest suicide rates in the country. A skate park isn't just concrete.
