The most personal song Chris Shiflett has ever written came from a silent argument he never had — with strangers at a surf break during COVID.

Shiflett grew up in Santa Barbara in the 1980s and hasn't lived there since 1989. When he came back during the pandemic, Hammond's Beach was crowded with people who'd never been there before — and something shifted. In this conversation he traces the real origin of "Born and Raised": the T-Bowl fires, the "LA Go Home" graffiti of his childhood, what it actually feels like to return to a place that no longer recognizes you, and how a single afternoon at a break he grew up surfing became the most honest thing he's put on record.

Before he was a Foo Fighter, he was a Santa Barbara kid. This is what happened when that kid tried to go home.
